Forget Me Knots Documentary

Award Winning Short Film

About This Project

Empty Cup’s Carla and Colin teamed up with buddy and colleague Evan Harper of Grand Design Films to enter a 5-day Doc Challenge. The contest was put on by DOC in conjunction with Hot Docs 2012, and it was a truly awesome experience and we are totally doing it again next year! We were emailed the theme and genre to incorporate into our project at 8am on day One. We had 5 days to conceptualize, shoot, edit, and package our film to be postmarked by 5pm on day Five.  Our dear friend Dorsey James heartily agreed to be a character in our piece highlighting the brilliant wood carving the now retired teacher produces.

There were some issues, as the bumpy road of life offers.  Colin got called in to an important shoot for a client of ours that not only monopolized one of our talented shooters, but also ALL of Empty Cup’s cameras. Big fat bummer. We were also supposed to have two other team members join who had to bail last minute because of personal reasons so their gear was kaput as well.  A few tears were spilled but with the strategic mind of Colin he managed to track down enough gear for Carla and Evan to produce the footage they needed.

Another awesome element to this film is that 3 of the 4 artists on the soundtrack are personal friends of Empty Cup. They all generously contributed their art to help produce another. (TORQ, Kate Reid, and Aspen Switzer) Thank you all for sharing your art.

Forget Me Knots was submitted to the Durham Art of Transition Creative Awards in fall 2012 for the “Best story about Durham Region” category. It was chosen by the panel of judges to win the award and was presented to Colin and Carla at a gala event hosted by the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa.
