How to Change a Lightbulb

A Solo Film Challenge

How to Change a Lightbulb

With so much extra time at home during the Covid lockdowns, Colin decided to make a solo short film based on an assignment he made for his Durham College class. Take something boring and make it look exciting. The assignment had a few other moving parts, but what he wanted to focus on was making the film 100% by himself. College students often film projects by themselves with them acting on camera too which is a huge challenge. So Colin wanted to make a film that simulated that college shooting experience.

Colin made a Facebook post asking for suggestions of boring household things. Then he chose “changing a lightbulb” because he could be really selective on what room he filmed in, it provided natural opportunities to play with light and he had some neat vintage-style lightbulbs around the house already. The shooting took about 5 hours to shoot (over 2 nights) and was filmed all in one room. The only added lighting came from 2 DJ uplights to help make 1 room look like 2. The editing too about 5 hours and went through a handful of proofs before it was finalized.

Enjoy! (It’s only 60 seconds long)
